January 2014, Poland -
"Sustainable Food"

On January 22 Mrs Bozena Bucwinska organized a meeting on the issue of "Sustainable Food".

Sustainable food combines qualities of being ecological, local and fresh. The food which meets these principles is the least harmful to the environment.

Ecological food means organic, low-carbon food production, which avoids artificial fertilizers and genetically modified organisms, is more beneficial to bio-diversity and the environment, and offers a long-term investment in soil fertility for future food production.

Local foodis produced and sold within a defined region ( in Great Britain such region covers the territory within 30-mile radius from the place where the food is sold) or purchased from the nearest source of production.

Fresh food is the food without preservatives, not processed, with the minimum of packaging, which minimises the negative impact on the environment from the current large scale disposal of inorganic waste. Because of its short-term expiry date it is often local food.
